Dr. Cascio uses the data generated from his research to teach other surgeons, present research at physician meetings, as well as to guide his decisions for optimal outcomes.
Cartilage
Research
Dr. Cascio trained with Dr. Richard Steadman at the Steadman Clinic. Dr. Steadman is the pioneer who invented the microfracture treatment for the treatment of cartilage injuries. Dr. Cascio participated in research on the microfracture technique for knee cartilage injuries. This research is still in progress. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Cascio also worked on the development of a hydrogel that helps make microfracture work better. This technology was developed through the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Elisseeff, Ph.D., and was recently bought by the BIOMET company.
Compartment Syndrome
Research
Dr. Cascio has published several papers and is sought after as an expert in cases all over the country in the diagnosis and treatment of a dangerous musculoskeletal condition called compartment syndrome.
Shoulder
Research
Dr. Cascio is participating in a long term study of bone preserving shoulder resurfacing arthroplasty techniques. He is also sought after for his expertise in shoulder arthroplasty and arthroscopy not only by patients, but also by orthopaedic companies seeking to design better implants and techniques to improve clinical outcomes and implant longevity.
Hip
Research
Hip Arthroscopy is a relatively new field in orthopaedics. Long term data is not available on hip arthroscopy in general and labral repair specifically. Dr. Cascio tracks pre-surgery/injection and post-surgery injection scores in order to deteremine how your do specifically and how people similar to you do in general after injections and surgery. It is voluntary and how you answer questions have no impact on your treatment. Dr. Cascio will offer you all options and help you choose the option that is best. Dr. Cascio does use the data generated from his research to teach other surgeons, present research at physician meetings, and to guide his decisions to optimize outcomes.
Youth Baseball Studies
Research
Dr. Cascio is the principle investigator at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital of an IRB-approved study investigation the impact of overuse injuries in youth baseball players. This study is part of a national study to try to manage the epidemic of shoulder and elbow injuries in youth baseball players. The study involves a survey and Dr. Cascio may make some measurements of the young pitchers arm. It is voluntary and how you answer questions have no impact on your treatment.
