Inflammatory Arthritis of the Hip

What is Inflammatory Arthritis of the Hip?

Inflammatory arthritis of the hip is a painful hip condition that can affect multiple joints. This condition is considered an immune system disease, unlike osteoarthritis, which occurs from wear-and-tear. Inflammatory arthritis of the hip can cause painful inflammation and can even limit mobility.

What causes Inflammatory Arthritis of the Hip?

If you are genetically predispositioned to have this condition, bacteria or a virus may cause a response from the immune system that attacks the hip joint. Inflammatory arthritis of the hip's exact cause is not yet known. Some of the types of this condition include ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Symptoms of this condition may include hip joint pain, as well as buttocks or outer thigh pain, and pain across the groin. Physical activities may cause the pain to lessen. Mobility issues, stiffness, and trouble walking are also potential signs of this condition.

How is Inflammatory Arthritis of the Hip Treated?

Treatment options may vary depending on the condition's type, severity, and other factors. Options may include rest and medication to reduce inflammation, as well as cortisone injections, antibiotics, and activity modification. If your condition is very severe or does not seem responsive to more conservative treatments, your doctor may recommend surgery.
