Burners and Stingers

What are Burners and Stingers?

Burners and stingers are terms that refer to injuries of the brachial plexus. These terms are used because the injuries result in stinging, warm sensations that tend to radiate from the shoulder to the hand.

What causes Burners and Stingers?

Burners and stingers are usually caused by trauma, and can often be seen as the result of tackles or falls from contact sports like wrestling or football. These injuries can irritate the nerve roots that travel through the shoulder and down the arm. This leads to irritation and stretching of the nerves, which results in shooting pain.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

A shocking sensation and weakness or numbness in the arm are often symptoms of burners and stingers. Typically the pain only lasts a few seconds, but in some cases it can last for hours or for days. Your doctor may diagnose you with this condition if you display these symptoms.

How are Burners and Stingers treated?

Burners and stingers usually respond well to conservative treatment. You may be prescribed rest, strengthening exercises, and physical therapy.
